Dudes Off Campus Video

I wanted to talk a little about the new DOC Video compression that I mentioned last month.

We're now encoding all submitted videos using the latest Quicktime 7 technology which will enable us to provide you with the best possible video in the smallest file size. Over time, we'll get around to recompressing all of the old content on DOC as well.

Just a few notes about the new compression. As this represents the latest in Quicktime, you'll need to be running Quicktime 7, available from www.apple.com/quicktime. We've chosen Quicktime as this will satisfy our Mac and PC users equally and offers us better potential quality and file size. I have unconfirmed reports that VLC will work for users using Linux, old version of Windows, or where Quicktime 7 will not install.

One more thing we're doing now is that when we get a new movie uploaded, we run it through Final Cut Pro and do some basic color correction and general clean-up on the movie.

That being said, if the original movie is of a low quality, there is no magic in Quicktime that will make it better looking (but it will still compress to a smaller file).

So when you're uploading, feel free to upload video in high resolution (in any format) and we'll compress it down into high quality Quicktime for you!

If you're having problems logging in, be sure to check out the steps here [link] . Always remember that you must have cookies enabled and not blocked to log in and use the site.

Performance Tip

I found about about a Firefox performance tip that I thought I'd pass along. This should improve page loading performance. This top only works in Firefox. In the URL bar of Firefox, type "about:config" and hit enter . In the filter text entry area, type "pipelining" and hit enter. The first result should be "network.http.pipelining" double click it and the value field should change to "true". Close and re-open Firefox and you're good to go. Enjoy!

Mail Issues

Over the past week or two, we've had some problems with your mail to us bouncing. This was due to our new, more restrictive spam filters but I think this has been resolved as of today. In any event, you can always get in touch with us using the contact form on the site.
